PREFACE

The Bishop's Transcripts in the Hereford Registry
having recently been sorted and made available for reference,
the entries for several years previous to those in the first
Volume have been copied and inserted here.

Volume I. of this Register consists of seventy-two
leaves of parchment, whereof thirty are assigned to
Baptisms from 1708 to 1812, twenty-four to Burials from
1708 to 18 1 2, and eighteen to Marriages from 1708 to
1754-

Volume II. contains the usual printed forms for
Marriages from 1754 to 181 2. The first entry is given
in full, but the subsequent entries are curtailed.

The Registers previous to 1708 have disappeared for
many years, they were not in existence in 1831. There
are no charities connected with the parish.

The Rectory of Munsley was united to the Vicarage
of Canon Frome by an order in Council dated Dec. nth,
1854, and upon the death of William Domville in 1859
the Rev. John Hopton, Vicar of Canon Frome, became
Rector of Munsley without induction until his death in
1871.

By a great error of judgment the old silver chalice
and paten, presented to the parish by John Elton, of
Paunceford Court, in the seventeenth century, was sold

Preface. vii

in 1869 for £6 i8s. 5d., and an electro-plated set bought
for £"] 2s. 6d.

The Church was restored in 1861 when an old stone —
now under the Communion table — was found with some
letters on it. Some people say it is an old Saxon notice
tablet. There is also a curious Parish Chest cut out of
one solid block of oak.

The present Rectory and glebe was exchanged and
enlarged by the Rev. John Hopton about 1853.

A curious ancient yew tree is still growing in the
Churchyard.

The mound on which the Lower Court stands is
probably the site of the old Manor House. Part of the
moat still exists.

The commuted value of the tithe is £2\(^ 14s. gd. Hop
tithe £6 13s. 6d., together with the Rectory House and
twenty-three acres of glebe.
